The 7 Pillars of Self Care

Self-care, wellness, well-being it's all pretty buzzy these days. I mean, we've all heard of #selfcaresunday and #wellnesswednesday, right? You can't go on social media without seeing someone talking about it. But what exactly is self-care? And why is it so important?

Self-care is simply taking care of yourself...um, not rocket science, right? So why is it so difficult?  It's about doing things that make you feel good and that help you stay healthy and happy. There are so many ways to practice self-care and mindful wellness, and what works for one person might not work for another and what works one day might not work another. As with most things in life, there aren't any hard or fast rules. Your self care is a personal journey. The important thing is to find what works for you and to make time for it in your life.

The various forms of self care can be grouped into eight main categories: mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational, and social.

**Mental self-care** involves taking care of your mind and your thoughts. It could include things like meditation, journaling, or spending time with family or friends.

**Emotional self-care** involves taking care of your emotions and your feelings. It could include things like talking to a therapist or a life coach, practicing mindfulness, or slowing down to learn a new hobby.

**Physical self-care** involves taking care of your body and your physical health. It could include things like eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

**Environmental self-care** involves taking care of your surroundings and your environment. It could include things like decluttering your home, getting fresh air, or spending time in nature.

**Spiritual self-care** involves taking care of your soul and your connection to something greater than yourself. It could include things like praying, meditating, or spending time in nature.

**Recreational self-care** involves taking time for fun and relaxation. It could include things like reading, watching a movie, or going for a walk.

**Social self-care** involves taking time for connection and community. It could include things like spending time with friends and family, joining a club or group, or volunteering.

So, obviously, self care is more than a bubble bath and a face mask. It's important to evaluate where you are in your life to determine what types of self care you might want to implement. I am a rock star when it comes to mental self care, but I am almost always struggling with physical self care. Sit with decide where you can improve what you need to make time for in your life.

Your absolute first step needs to be accepting the fact that YOU should be at the top of your priority list. I mean, for as much BS as airlines put us through, they really had that figured out SO early! Put your oxygen mask on first! It's important to take care of yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself for others.

In addition to the 7 pillars of self-care, here are a few more tips for taking care of yourself:

* Give yourself some grace and understand self care isn't another thing to add to your to do list and feel crappy about if you don't check it off. Don't beat yourself up if you don't always have time for self-care. Just do your best to make it a priority.
* Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're struggling to take care of yourself, talk to a friend, family member, therapist, or life coach. We all know you CAN do it all, but just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Asking for help is one of the hardest things to do for yourself, but can often have the biggest impact.
* Make self-care a habit. The more you do it, the easier it will become.
* Find what works for you. There is no one right way to practice self-care. Experiment until you find what makes you feel good.
* Don't be afraid to change things up. If what you're doing isn't working, try something different.

Self-care is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. As a society we have put SO much focus on our physical well being that we have often neglected our mental well being and we need our minds to be right, now more than ever. By taking care of yourself, you can improve your mental and physical health, and you can be more present and engaged in your life.
